USA Reviews Nothing, like in years past had jumped out at me so far. It was all pretty much so so, and one of the reasons I love this festival is when you get to find that one band you had never heard of that just blows you away. I was worried it wasn't going to happen. That was until I went back to the Wall Street main stage and got the chance to hear Toy Horses. The band hails from Wales and their indie-pop-rock sound had me bopping my head and dancing around. I couldn't help it, I couldn't even control the huge smile across my face during their whole set. Tom rocked a ukuele and after the show shared with me that they're playing another show on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at BackBooth. I was so happy to hear it because the rain prevented the kind of crowd this band truly deserves. If you do anything during this festival, it should be to check Toy Horses out. If press blurbs were an effective spur to action, there'd be a line to see Toy Horses, a passionate Baroque Pop duo (with band backing) that's both peppy and edgy with exquisite harmonies and melodies. The Welsh Lennon/McCartney were dubbed the 'Band to Watch' at this year's SXSW by respected DJ Nic Harcourt (the closest thing we have to John Peel here), their song 'What About the Future' placed second in Billboard's World Song Contest and they just recorded their debut album with former Wilco drummer Ken Coomer. It's an oft-cited phrase but Mr. Harcourt hit this one on the head - Toy Horses is the band to watch here as well. Dig: The Beatles if they'd started with Sgt. Pepper, The Kinks if Everybody's in Show Biz had been their debut. UK Review Adam Franklin and Tom Williams are ukulele fuelled melodic indie duo 'Toy Horses.' Leaving their hometown of Cardiff for Texas, they've already wooed crowds at this year's SXSW, most notably picking up support from radio KCRW's Nic Harcourt, arguably America's most influential DJ, credited for spring boarding the careers of the likes of Coldplay and Dido in the states. They've been praised by the BBC's Tom Robinson and Steve Lamacq and have recently recorded new tracks in Nashville with Ken Coomer (Wilco) and Tim Marks (Taylor Swift), 2009 has been a good year. Their song 'But What About The Future' name checks Doctor Who, Stephen Fry, Rugrats, Seagulls and being too drunk to get on a plane. It also won them 2nd place in the Billboard World Song Contest. Just on the right side of quirkiness and pop sensibility, in the tradition of Libertines and Kooks. You wonder how long before Tom's electric ukulele gets it's airing on Jools Holland. |
